For what it's worth, this is my take: I always write 'Redpoll' in my notebook. I'm sure they are all Lessers, but I cannot clinch them in flight, so use Redpoll as a catch-all. Some might say: "Dont be so pedantic - of course they're all Lessers!" and write 'Lesser Redpoll' in their book. Naturally, I know that my way is best, but one has to make allowances for all sorts I suppose...
Getting consistency out of a bunch of birders is way too much to ask! ;o)
