Sunday 11 September 2011

Start Point

Seawatch 06:45-11:00. Really only counted until 10:00, while there was still cloud cover and a little sun glare. Heading SW: 10 Sooty Shearwaters, 17 Balearic Shearwaters, 133 Manx, 3 Bonxies, Arctic Tern (close in), 2 distant 'commic' terns, 911 Gannets, 4 Common Scoter, 7 Razorbills, 9 Guillemots, 16+ Fulmars.

So there still appears to be little movement west off the large feeding gathering of shearwaters further up in Lyme bay. This gathering (initially mostly Manx) appears to have been present from at least 5th September, while Balearic numbers are going up (aided by the SW winds), no doubt additions from southern Brittany where there were 5000 on 2nd September, before they dispersed. So how many will it build up to? Could that old Portland record go?
