Berry Head Yesterday (11th Sept)

16.50 – 18.50

Large numbers of Manx and Balearic Shearwaters gathered offshore on arrival, both close-in and distant. This made any accurate counting very difficult, as I felt I would be counting at least some of the birds twice; 400+ Manx Shearwaters and 75+ Balearic Shearwaters would be a conservative estimate. Birds began to disperse after 17.30, and there was a northward passage of c.50 Balearic Shearwaters and c.250 Manx Shearwaters in the final hour I was there with the Balearics generally much closer in than the Manx’s.

Also noted were 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 7 Arctic Skuas, 8 Great Skuas, 1 Pomarine Skua, and 4 skua sp.
