Bad Bird Ticks

Following on from Gavin's post in early September, I have just received two photos from a friend who lives in a very rural part of Dartmoor.

The Coal Tit was found dead in her garden with one large tick and the House Sparrow died soon after the photo was taken and was found to have four large ticks.

Is this a new phenomena or just with modern digital zoom cameras we are able to see more?
