Seawatching 0600-1300hrs:
53 Pomarine Skuas of mixed ages most with short spooned tailed but several with full spoons, largest single group 8 (remarkable passage for Aug), 31 Arctic Skua, 21 Bonxie, 66 Balearic Shearwaters (including a very white undersided bird, structurally spot on for Balearic but white even extended thinly between the legs), 402 Manx Shearwaters, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 1 Little Gull, 721 Kittiwake (inc 61 juvs), 39 Common Tern, 5 Sandwich Tern, 748 Gannets, 24 Fulmar. 22 Common Scoter and Harbour Porpoise. ML, MD & DMN
Immature (not always easy to age but 1st summer left, and a trickier 2nd perhaps 3rd summer on right - difficult to work out what is going on in the underwing coverts! ML) Pomarine Skuas. MD

Marsh Harrier (while driving home) being mobbed by gulls heading west low over Tweenaways at 14:45, could not refind it for a photo! MD

Bit of late news from last Saturday 13/8 - 100+ Wheatears on the W coast of Lundy [from Tim Clyburn]

A lovely single Grey Plover in breeding plumage on the river side of Isley Marsh this afternoon. Loads of Curlew, Oyster Catcher, Little Egret a single Common Sand & Bar Tailed Godwit. [from John Towers]

East Soar, Sunday am, 2 Tree Pipit, Wheatear, Sand Martin, Willow Warblers.  Called in at Thurlestone/S milton on return, the attached photo shows very juv Wheatear feeding behind beach cafe [from Dave Norman]

Waders in the Bay at high tide-07.50 70 Ringed Plover ( highest count this year ), 8 Dunlin, 2 Turnstone, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Whimbrel.

A TreePipit by the coast path - Bob B had 2 fly over.
Thurlestone marsh - Bob B ringed 29 Sedge. Also this morning 4 Teal & 3 Gadwall were new arrivals. A Swift flew thru.

14/08/11 - English Channel

Yesterday from a fishing boat.
About 11nm off Start Point one Sooty Shearwater and 3 European Storm-petrels otherwise pretty quiet.

Heading back, about 1nm off Dartmouth large feeding frenzy of Gannets with c1000 Manx Shearwaters (no Balearics seen) and a couple of Bonxies.

All the waders were on the foreshore between the Cricket Ground and Fuel Jetty.

Clennon Valley

A new brood of Tufted Ducks on middle pond and several of Jersey Tigers including these two in the garden (one rescued from a spiders web but not looking good!)

Colyford Common / Blackhole Marsh, Seaton, 17.30 - 19.00

5 Wood Sandpipers, 1 Little Stint, 2 Greenshank, 8 Green Sandpipers, 6 Common Sandpipers, 10 Dunlin, 6 Ringed plover, 2 Whimbrel on the scrapes & Lagoon, & 2 swifts overhead.

N.W Dartmoor - Upper Lyd and Doe Tor Farm

An early evening visit in pleasant, sunny conditions with some cloud and a NW breeze; good to find that Stonechats have had an excellent breeding season at this location - minimum 5 family groups, and we saw at least 25 birds; Whinchat family, Hobby, male Redstart & 7 Ravens (or more). No sign of Wheatear.

Kingsbridge Estuary

Geese Quarries - Charleton Marsh, 13:00-16:45, rising tide.
Nice bit of sunshine but the bright conditions and a strong wind made viewing difficult. 3 Little Grebes in Frogmore Creek were a bit early, bit of a mystery where the wintering birds on the local estuaries come from, perhaps these from not far away. Also in Frogmore Creek about a hundred Herring Gulls plus one that was looking a good candidate for a juv Yellow-legged. At this point the Lord said 'Perry, stop trying to make out like you're a Larophile', and sent a female Marsh Harrier overhead scattering them all ways. At least 6 Med Gulls ( 5 adults and a third calender year bird ) were around. Out on the mudflats in Charleton Bay were 150 Curlew, at least 3 Whimbrel, 10 Dunlin, 65 Ringed Plover and a Bar-tailed Godwit. Also 6 Sandwich Terns and a Peregrine here. The marsh itself was quiet except for 2 Green Sandpipers.

Thurlestone Bay

Waders on the beach / marsh this am - 10 Ringed Plover, 1 Turnstone, 1 Green Sandpiper, 2 Wheatear in the field behind the cafe

The ringing team really took the accolades today, after a night with some moon the warblers made for T Marsh & S M Ley totals were:-

Sedge 142 ( + 2 Controls - one English & 1 French ) , Reed 20, Whitethroat 7, Willow 25, Chiffchaff 11, Groppa 1., Blackcap 1 And a first for the year a Lesser Whitethroat. The Sedge total is a new site daily record.

Just shows the value of having a ringing team , if I had walked both sites this am my total of Sedge would have been less than 10 and I would have come away well pleased !

Prawle this weekend

This Sanderling was the only wader of note from this morning's WeBS count.

Other birds today included a Snipe flying west (first of the autumn), 3 Swifts and 2 Sand Martins with an ever increasing gathering of House Martins and Swallows, numbering several hundred of each by early afternoon, a Wheatear, 2 Meadow Pipits (also the first of the autumn), 30 Whitethroats, 8 Blackcaps, 2 Sedge Warblers, 16 Willow Warblers, but just 6 Chiffchaffs today.

Saturday 13/8; Seawatching from 06.00 - 10.00 produced c750 Gannets, 110 Manx and 8 Balearic Shearwaters, 28 Common Scoters, Curlew, 2 Whimbrel, 4 each of Great and Arctic Skuas, 78 Kittiwakes and 2 Puffins. Elsewhere, a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was on the airfields, and other other birds today included a Hobby, 11 Swifts, 3 Wheatears, Redstart, 2 Sedge Warblers, 30 Whitethroats, 8 Blackcaps, 6 Willow Warblers and 24 Chiffchaffs.

Possible Black Kite

A possible Black Kite (and the description really is quite good) flew west over Yelverton cricket club at 7pm yesterday. It came from the direction on Cadover Bridge.

Bowling Green Marsh - 10/08/11

Sorry for the delay in putting this up, but here's what Tim Stripp saw on Bowling Green Marsh on 10/08/11...

"An evening at bowling green produced 50+black headed gulls, a green sandpiper, a ringed plover, 3 greylag geese, 4 canada geese, 8 bar tailed and 30+ black tailed godwits, 10 greenshank, 40+ redshank, 40+ curlew, 3 whimbrel, 2 herring gulls, a dabchick, 2 wood pigeons, 1 willow warbler, 3 mute swans (2 cygnets), swallows and house martins, 1 magpie, 2 carrion crows and 2 buzzards."

Axe Estuary

This morning there's a Little Stint on Black Hole Marsh, with a Hobby south over, at least six Wood Sandpipers (last seen landing on Colyford Marsh) and 8+ Green Sands.

Beesands Ley

Reasonable numbers of waterbirds for August on the ley this afternoon which included 51 Gadwall, 15 Tufted Duck, 4 Pochard and 96 Coot.
Re Alans Juv Marsh Harrier the bird i saw there on Wednesday was distant so i was guilty of assuming it was the normal bird seen on and off for many years locally. Whilst it does make random appearances on the marsh more likely i would think that only one bird is hanging around the vicinity so i probably saw the same bird as Al.

3 Wood sands still at Blackhole marsh this evening plus 13 Dunlin,9 Ringed plover,8 Common sands and 6 blackwits.

Thurlestone Bay

Only a few waders in the bay this am- 10 Ringed Plover , 2 Dunlin , 1 Turnstone

Kingsbridge Estuary

juv. Marsh Harrier W Charleton Marsh area (as seen 8/8) adW Med Gull, Ham sandwich and a bottle of orange with bits in' a proper Boatyard Lunch.

There were three Wood Sandpipers on Black Hole Marsh this morning. Other waders present were two Green Sandpiper, five Common Sabdpiper and four Dunlin.

Upottery Airfield, Smeatharpe

A quick look this morning saw a hint of migration with single Wheatear and Hobby, 5 Chiffchaffs, 2 Willow warblers and a Whitethroat. A Sparrowhawk caused chaos amongst the many finches and starlings. A young Brown Hare was a pleasant surprise. Plenty of gatekeepers, meadow browns and common blues on the wing plus the odd small heath.

Thurlestone Bay

Apologies - no report today - Doug & I went to Porthgwarra- he was desparate to pick up Cory's- after 3 previous visits success including a relatively close in sighting, also Great S', Balearic & Sooties, Bonxies & Arctic Skuas, Stormies. Very good views of Turtle Dove at Drift but dipped the Black Kite

Prawle - again!

Seawatching from 15.30 - 20.00; 136 Gannets, 27 Fulmars, 900 Manx Shearwaters, 10 Balearic Shearwaters, Storm Petrel, Curlew, 57 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. (Gives day totals of 1800 Manx and 16 Balearics).

Slapton Ley

Had a quick look at the ley from Torcross and then the central car park this evening. Would say there were minimum counts of 1000 Sand Martins, 500 Swallows, 250 House Martins and 20 Swifts. No terns and few gulls on the ley. Out in Start Bay several hundred Kittiwakes suffering no hassle from any skuas.

Prawle seawatch

Frank was present from 6.30 am and had 200+ Manx, I was present from 8.00-14.00 and logged 700 further Manx, 6 Balearic, 1 Sooty Shearwater (11.20, so different bird from Start) also 1 Eider, 2 Sandwich Tern, 12 Ringed Plover, 2 Whimbrel. Strangely we did not get the heavy rain belt which happened at Start! which may be why the Great Shearwater was not seen .

Prawle Point

Good numbers of Manx Shearwaters past Prawle Point this morning along with 3 Balearic Shearwaters and 28 Common Scoters.

Berry Hd

Some great pictures sent to me from Nigel Smallbones -taken by Paul Holmes on 2nd August on top of Berry Hd headland! 1 Sunfish and then a couple of Bonxies which were having a go at the local Herring Gulls.

There was a Juv Wood Sandpiper on the scrape at Colyford Common this morning. Other waders present were 64 Curlew, 2 Greenshank, 4 Green Sandpiper and a Common Sandpiper.

09/08/11- English Chanel 20nm S of Start Point

Around the fishing boat yesterday 09/08/11: one Bonxie, 10 European Storm-petrels. Again one light phase Fulmar in with the numerous double lights.

A quiet ringing morning - only 8 Sedge & 2 Willow.

Green Sandpiper -2 S H Msh, 1 Tstn Msh.

In the bay 4 L B B Gull , 1ad + 1juv Yellow L Gull, 1juv Med Gull. 16 Ringed Plover..

At Upton Cross ( near South Milton ) 12.00 - 32 Swift- feeding high, 10 House martin .

Over Thurlestone marsh at 18.00- 20 Sand Martin & 2 Swift

I can't compete with the ringing totals at S Milton/Thurlestone, but did catch some migrants today:
3 Swallows, 6 Reed Warblers, 3 Sedge Warblers, 2 Chiffchaffs, 1 Willow Warbler, 3 Goldcrests, and a Cetti's Warbler (not strictly a migrant I know, but worth a mention).

Bowling Green Marsh

The Wood Sandpiper was still present at the back of the main pool until 1930hrs at least this evening. Low tide meant nothing more than a couple of Green Sandpipers and a lone Greenshank could be found on the main pool.

Thurlestone Bay

WNW f5/6 brought a few interesting birds into the Bay this am-first juv Kittiwake , Common Gull, 2 Manx S'water followed by a Sooty S'water moving west at 11.10. A Little Tern flew thru at 11.25 (first of the year ).

Waders on the Beach- 1 Whimbrel, 8 Ringed Plover, 3 Sanderling, 2 Dunlin. Roger managed to trap one of the Ringed Plovers,.

Warblers ringed this am - 36 Sedge, 9 Reed, 3 Blackcap, 8 Willow & 1 Chiffchaff.

Taw Bridge, Barnstaple

10 Mediterranean Gulls, incl Polish ringed bird "PAH4" last seen at Skern on 01/08/2011.
Also 35 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 3 Common Gulls and 1 Little Egret.

Berry Head

16:00 - 20:00. 116 Manx, 6 Balearic, 1 Bonxie, 1 Arctic Skua, 1 C Tern, 2 S Tern, 1 auk sp, 1 Redshank, 1 Oyc.

2 Harbour Porpoise. 1 Ocean Sunfish - c.1.5 metre diameter; so close in, first picked it up by hearing its dorsal fin splashing. Basked for 5 mins before descending back into the inky gloom.

Start Point

Seawatch 12:30-18:30: Cory's Shearwater (at 15:25), Sooty Shearwater, Balearic Shearwater, 569 Manx Shearwaters, 13 Common Scoter, 2 Sandwich Terns and Yellow-legged Gull (juv).

Thurlestone Bay

No movement thru the Bay this morning to compare with Porthgwarra- a max oe 10 Gannet !

5 Sandwich Tern in the Bay ( 1 juv ), 1juv Med Gull, 2 Common Gull, 5 Ringed Plover, 3 Dunlin & 1jv Wheatear.

Due to the high wind only 1 small net put up , still caught 12 Sedge.

South Milton Ley

Ceremonial unveiling of the new plaque about South Milton Ley this morning- great effort by Nick Townsend to oversea this project and a special mention of the work Jim Bennett did to ensure its success also to Vic Tucker / Bob Burridge for their inspiration over the last 30 years to produce a site that offers so much to the birds we are now watching and ringing.

Only a report of the ringing team today - what a day total for the site a most suitable dedication to all those years of hard graft and work :-

2 Groppa, 18 Chiffchaff, 81 Willow , 48 Sedge, 15 Reed 4 Whitethroat, 1 Blackcap, 6 Garden Wblr ( site day record )

Just makes you wonder how many birds are moving through the site- with the no. of nets up these could represent only 50% - what a fantastic site

Black Hole Marsh

Adult Pectoral Sandpiper this afternoon - showing well from the Island Hide. Other waders included 3 Dunlin, plus 2 Ringed Plovers on the estuary.

Pec Sand - Seaton

This cracking adult Pec Sand has been showing on Black Hole Marsh this afternoon from the island hide. Just a pity the sun didn't come out whilst it was on view...

Wembury Point

At Wembury Point this morning; 1 Little Ringed Plover, 5 Ringed Plover, 2 Dunlin, 2 Redshank, 2 Whimbrel and a Grasshopper Warbler.

Prawle Area

A trawl around Prawle this morning in calm conditions produced a moderate number and variety of passerine migrants:

85 Willow Warbler, 20 Chiff-Chaff, 35 Whitethroat (mostly residents), 7 Blackcap, 2 Sedge Warbler, 1 Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Tree Pipit, 1 Wheatear and a few Sand Martins through

Horsey Island. Braunton Marshes

There were also 100s of adult and juvenile Swallows on the road surface of the Toll Road until the traffic started running.

High Land of Orcombe

Wheatear in field adjoining coastal footpath. 7 Scoter off Straight Point and flock (morning conference!) of 245+ Cormorants on the sea off Orcombe with at least another 60 on Straight Point.

Black Kite, Ashridge Farm

A couple of heavily cropped pics of the Black Kite taken on 4 August. On occasions it showed well but was also elusive

Thurlestone Marsh

Brief report - 1 Green Sandpiper , Bob B put up 1 net and in 1 hour had 33 Sedge Wblr including 1 jv british control.

Over Avtn Gifford a Hobby at 10.00

Bowling Green Marsh

A quick look in this evening produced:

Ruff (flew down river at 1950hrs), 2 Green Sandpipers, a lone Greenshank, 2 Shovelers, an eclipse drake Wigeon and one of the Fox family was stalking along the far shoreline. 2 juv Mediterranean Gulls flew over. Tide had not risen high enough to produce the usual numbers of waders.

A few birds from yesterday

03/08/11- English Channel 11nm off Start Point

Yesterday 03/08/11, from a fishing boat: Pomarine Skua (adult), 3 Great Skua, 3 Arctic Terns, 8 Common Terns, 80+ Manx Shearwater, 3 European Storm-petrels, 5+ Yellow-legged Gulls (juvs) in with numerous Lesser Black-backs and Herring Gulls and around 100 Fulmars (all double light phase bar one light phase).


Despite going out to sea on this fishing boat on regular basis for a year now, I have still failed to see any large shearwaters...... yet (a part from Sooties)!! But of interest a Cory's Shearwater was just off Portland harbour a few days ago, see the amazing photos at http://www.marine-life.org.uk/

Otter Estuary / Budleigh Beach

The Glaucous Gull makes it into August, present on the beach again today. On the nearby Otter on this evening's high tide:

Dawlish Warren

juv Kentish Plover in The Bight on the evening rising tide. Flew towards beach with small wader flock, where people were walking tide-line.

Topsham BGM

Black-tailed Godwit + Greenshank

Water levels up with the big spring tides. Could only find 6 Dunlin, 8 Black-tailed Godwits and a few Common Sandpipers this evening, plus a juv Med Gull.

Skern 2 Aug

First real signs of Autumn wader passage at this site today over high tide.

29 Dunlin, 19 Ringed Plover and singles of Little Ringed Plover (Juv), Turnstone, Sanderling, and Whimbrel.

Only 2 Med Gulls today, and disappointingly no Terns, but the Dark-bellied Brent was still present.

Islay Marsh - Saturday 30/7

On a walk from Instow around to the marsh at back while the tide was coming in we saw a juvenile Stonechat near the little pond. Not seen any there at all before.

Also large numbers of Curlew, OysterCatchers and Med Gulls. A young fledged Oystercatcher with it's parents and a couple of Black Tailed Godwit.

Back at the cricket pitch 3 Little Owls, one adult & two youngsters I think.

Bob B had a female Marsh Harrier over at 08.00 also Garden Wblr. 1 Curlew over at 18.00

Ringing team at both S M Ley & Tstn Marsh - 1 Water Rail, 10 Willow, 6 Sedge, 3 Reed , 1 Blackcap. Interestingly one of the Reed Wblr controlled on Tstn Marsh ringed there on 23/5/2008.

This morning- waders in the Bay - 3 Ringed Plover, 1 Dunlin , 1 Whimbrel. 6 Sandwich Tern , 1 Common Tern, 1 jv Med Gull 3 Manx S'water

South H Marsh- 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Greenshank, 1 Wood sandpiper.

Exminster marshes

During a brief visit this morning two green sandpipers calling and flying around. Probably looking for water as the only visible water is now the lagoon. On the lagoon the coot flock has increased to 50 birds. Also there 2 little grebes. A few blackcaps and whitethroats on the canal bank (all juvs).

Skern, Northam Burrows

07:10 - 09:00

1 Dark-bellied Brent Goose; 6 Med Gulls, incl 2 Polish ringed birds( that`s 3 different ones in 3 days); 4 Whimbrel; 9 Common Tern and 1 Wheatear.

A little bit of research(Devon Bird Report 2009) revealed that the same 2 ringed birds were observed at Instow by Rob Marshall in July 2009.
Both carried a red ring with white alpha/numerics on right leg.
PAJ7 Ringed 10/05/05 at Radyczyny, Turek, Poland.
PAH4 Ringed 06/05/06 at Mietrow, Wroclaw, Poland.

Prawle area

Another day of Warbler movement, with Whitethroats at the fore today. A total of 150 included c100 in and around a pea crop, the majority of which were, as to be expected, juveniles. Other warbler totals were 55 Willows, 20 Chiffchaff, 9 Blackcaps and 6 Sedge. 35+ Swifts were with a large gathering of Hirundines, including at least 7 Sand Martins, and there were 4 Wheatears in the area. Waders were limited to a Whimbrel, 4 Ringed Plovers, a Dunlin and 2 Common Sandpipers.

Blackhole marsh and the Exe

Blackhole marsh,

there were 6 Little ringed plovers 2 ad and 4 juv. Also 2 Green sandpipers, 10+ common sandpipers and about 7-8 dunlin.

A single juv Yellow legged gull was on the estuary.

Also an ad Yellow wagtail on the way out of Axemouth.

Exemouth,

4 ad summer Med gulls with about 40-50 black headed gulls.

Yesterday afternoon 4 Med gulls south of Turf in the estuary; one juvenile, 3 adults (1sp & 2 wp) and 4 sandwich terns. At the mouth of the estuary 6 gannets, 12 sandwich terns, a few comic terns and a couple of kittiwakes. Half way to Brixham 2 and then a further 7 manx shearwaters (all east) and 21 kittiwakes (all adults).
